Abstract (English)

Osborne discusses some of the issues at stake in Shimada's work, namely the role and situation of Japanese women during the war, and the government's military propaganda in relation to its influence on the mind set of contemporary Japan. The author elaborates on the artist's use of archival photos and historic details which combine the domestic and the political to produce confrontational pieces. Texts by the artist.
