Abstract (English)

Publication made to accompany the exhibition "Claudia Hart: Dr. Faustie's Guide to Real Estate Development". Cully's essay focuses on Hart's self-portraits, which address themes of exile, Western subjectivity and identity by employing conceptual strategies of disturbance, self-parody and allegory. The historical materials informing the artist's practice - drawn from the Frankfurt School's critique of Romanticism, the Enlightenment and Modernity - are situated within the socio-cultural contexts of European/American avant-garde art, and president Clinton's style of leadership. 7 bibl. ref.
