Abstract (English)

In this catalogue to accompany a touring exhibition of Skelton’s work, Meredith’s descriptive analysis of the artist’s “Canadiana” exhibition places emphasis on the subjects of installation art and site-specificity. Nasby’s essay focuses on Skelton’s “Begging Bear” sculpture: an animal/human hybrid that refers to taxidermy, art history and auto body repair. Hunter draws the artist and his sculptural creatures into a hybrid text – part western, part science-fiction and part art criticism – that deals with connections between nature, culture and technology. L.G. Mark’s interpretation of Skelton’s “Wild Things” exhibition centres on relationships between truth and fiction, art and theatre, object and performance. Her review, originally published in “C magazine,” is accompanied by a letter to the editor of “C” by Heather Wells (the artist’s wife), and a letter in response to Wells by Mark. Brief statements by the artist. List of works. 3 bibl. ref.
