Abstract (English)

Catalogue for McCrum’s exhibition of conceptually informed abstract paintings, sculptures and diagrammatic interpretation of the French Revolution (incorporating portraits of the artist’s friends and acquaintances). Texts by 11 authors situate the artist’s work within the contexts of historical materialism and postmodernism. The following topics are discussed in relation to how McCrum’s work critiques systems of power: the artist’s non-productive “practice of non-practice,” his involvement with OR Gallery and Vancouver’s art community, and the role played by institutions in conferring meaning and value on art. Includes list of individuals represented in the French Revolution portraits. Biographical notes. 35 bibl. ref.
