Abstract (English)

This catalogue documents a series of eleven exhibitions by emerging artists from Toronto, presented at the Koffler Centre of the Arts’ Loggia Gallery between 1992 and 1995. Massier’s curatorial essay foregrounds the playful/ironic characteristics of the exhibitions in “High Junk.” Particular attention is given to the artists’ use of readymades in creating hybrid works influenced by Pop, Dada, Duchamp and General Idea. Hunter’s text outlines some of the historical/cultural events that have inspired his curatorial practice: Daniel Thrapps’ disappearance in a Southern Utah desert during the 1930s; Al Teague’s land speed record of 432 mph; the Trinity Test in the Los Alamos desert (birthplace of the atomic bomb); and René Daumal’s surrealist novel “Mount Analogue” (1952). Includes excerpts from texts by Massier which originally accompanied each exhibition. Brief biographical notes. 13 bibl. ref.
