Abstract (English)

Stafford's book contains twelve "manifestos on the knowingness of visual communication." Her critique of a language-centred view of consciousnes places emphasis on the cognitive value of material artifacts and graphic presentations. Topics discussed include: changes to perception due to technological innovation; relationships between past and present forms of representation within visual art, design studies, medical science and mass media; and the need for interdisciplinary approaches to imaging.
