Abstract (English)

Rhodes is primarily concerned with how Beam's reworking of historic images functions on a formal and connotative level - specifically, where his use of Columbus's portrait fits into the history of representations of Columbus, and how this operates on the (white) viewer's psychology. The author interprets the cycle as a challenge to the legitimacy of previous imagery.
