Abstract (English)

Documentation of the four phases of "The Homeless Vehicle Project" in New York and Philadelphia and the projection/photomontage installation "Tomkins Square Tableaux" by Wodiczko. After a brief introduction by Colo, Smith's chronology of key events in Tompkins Square Park furnishes the reader with a clear context. Lurie's and Wodiczko's statement is a rationale of the Vehicle project accompanied by shots of the vehicles in use. Deutsche contextualizes Wodiczko's projects since 1984 in an account of the urban dynamics of preservation, "renewal" development and gentrification, analyzing New Yorks deterritorialization of urban space into private property. Finally, Courtney discusses the impact of the vehicle project in Philadelphia (1989). Biographical notes. 56 bibl. ref.
