Abstract (English)

Rainbird's essay provides a narrative of Richter's artistic development and influences. Germer assesses the painter's production in terms of the artist's historical, philosophical and aesthetic awareness of his medium, its function and reception. Ascherson discusses Richter's identity in the social and political context of postwar Germany. Includes writings by Richter from 1966 to 1990, mostly from his private journals, and interspersed with photographs of the artist in his studio. Biographical notes. Bibl. 6 p.
