Abstract (English)Catalogue from an exhibition of Brittain’s drawings and paintings bearing Christian iconography, produced between 1946 and 1951. While the artist’s daughter (J. Brittain) recounts her memories in an anecdotal manner, Foss evokes Brittain’s religious experiences to explain the singularity of the works from this period, recalling his moral preoccupations as a “war artist.” Collins’ biographical text presents Brittain as a tormented artist and compares this thematic production with his literary, genre and war scenes – which he subsumes under the single category of a study of the human condition.
