Abstract (English)

Video documentation of “Aryan Household” (1998), performed by Kessin as part of Black History Month (February, 2000). After a brief introduction, the artist opens a box-like construction filled with small paintings of objects from her childhood in post-war Germany (household products, dolls and puppets referring to people of colour). Before displaying each painting, the artist provides a brief autobiographical account of the object’s origins (the issue of racism and Kessin’s multi-racial family are discussed). The performance ends with Kessin distributing a small artist’s book to the audience.
