Abstract (English)

Catalogue to accompany an exhibition of the visual and literary works by Chiasson, native of Saint-Simon (NB). Townsend-Gault explains the tensions (including an Acadian “critical regionalism”) present in this very diverse production. From “conceptualism to pop-post-neo-expressionism,” the artist strives to push boundaries, integrating installation, photography, drawing, painting and printmaking. Boudreau reflects on Chiasson’s equally polymorphous literary and poetic production and concentrates on the textual and visual content in nine collections of poetry from 1974-1998. All forms of the artist’s production reflect certain recurrent themes (memory and melancholy, the body and mind, estrangement and aspiration towards the infinite), and the use of orality, humour, self-derision and fragmentation. Masson presents a retrospective study of the film work freely inspired by the documentary and road movie genres, reflecting themes of the everyday (Vermeer), wandering (Wenders), the Annunciation (Pasolini), and the quest (Kerouac). Colour plates. Selected texts and reproductions of book covers. Texts in English and French. List of illustrations. Bio-bibliography.

Notice biobibliographique.
