Abstract (English)

A pamphlet accompanying an exhibition on the theme of portraiture, which brought together Canadian works from the gallery’s permanent collection. Paikowsky traces the movements that have punctuated the development of the genre and identifies the two main visions that characterize it: the portrait as a mimetic image of the subject, and the portrait as a metaphor of being. Dépliant d'une exposition sur le thème du portrait qui regroupe des œuvres canadiennes choisies à même la collection permanente de la galerie. Paikowsky retrace les mouvements qui ont marqué l'évolution du genre et identifie les deux principales visions qui le caractérisent : le portrait comme image mimétique du sujet ou comme métaphore de l'être.
