Abstract (English)

Foster's book contains seven essays focusing on the role of historical and neo-avant-gardes in art and theory from the seventies, eighties and nineties. Questions concerning the value of criticism in late-twentieth-century visual/political culture are considered in relation to minimalist art, phenomenalogical interpretations of the body, and structuralist analyses of the sign. Includes numerous references to well known twentieth-century artists, philosophers and critics. Index. Circa 340 bibl. ref.
