Abstract (English)

The author traces Houle's work from the early 70s to 1989, and recounts the artist's political resignation as Curator at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. His paintings are described as both contemporary and traditional, drawing on North American Indian and Western European cultures. Includes discussion of Houle's use of the parfleche, Christianity's effect on Indian spirituality, and the naming of obliterated tribes. Biographical notes. 3 bibl. ref.
