Abstract (English)

Laurence argues that the discourses of postmodernism are inappropriate for Marshall’s neo-expressionistic still lifes: though loaded with references to art history, Marshall’s paintings directly express visceral, emotional, and personal experiences that demand no intellectual justification. Laurence sketches the artist’s turn from social paintings to still lifes, which nevertheless speak of human intervention in the world. Biographical notes. 22 bibl. ref.
