Abstract (English)

Vancouver’s cultural and social identity is represented here by photographic portraits of its inhabitants, taken from a wide range of material dating from 1950 to 2001 from archival, private, and commercial sources. 19 writers respond to an image of their choice with short texts including poetry, fiction, art criticism, and reportage. Recurring themes include the nature of photography, identity, human relationships, memory, time, and the tendency to fictionalise the past. Sherrin discusses the concept and practice of portraiture, its history, and its applicability to Vancouver. Biographical notes. 24 bibl. ref.
