Abstract (English)

Dunlap’s idiosyncratic, encyclopaedic guide to style, period, and ism, targets "culture vultures": dilettantes with no time for serious study but with a desire to be knowledgeable when at museums, galleries and cultural events. Written with an American bias, the entries detail key concepts and identifying characteristics in art, architecture, history, philosophy, religion, music, literature, and the decorative arts, contextualizing them and tracing influences. Most entries refer to standard or accessible books on the heading. Bibl. 11 p. Index 14 p.
