Abstract (English)

Gogarty provides an historical context for Martineau’s work, which encompasses the Arts and Crafts movement, the immigrant experience in 19th century New York, and suburban middle-class life. For Gogarty, the artist’s employment of hybrid forms and outmoded materials questions the modernist aesthetic of purity, exposing its ideological and political underpinnings. 14 bibl. ref.
