Abstract (English)

Thom surveys Hughes’ career from the 1930s to 2002 in this book produced in conjunction with a major retrospective of the artist’s work. A portrait of Hughes’ peripatetic life in British Columbia and elsewhere, it includes an account of his experience as a war artist and focuses on the significant influence of his dealer, Max Stern, and their correspondence.
