Abstract (English)

"When the series Without End was exhibited in London (England) in 2003, I was approached by a woman who, after seeing my photographs, asked if she could model for me. The woman had undergone a mastectomy and was deeply touched by the images. Her interest in my work and our subsequent session together was the catalyst for Between Self and Other.

In this series, I photographed people who have experienced radical changes to their bodies as a result of surgery, accident or aging. Six large-scale photographs of human figures explore our lived experience of the body and reflect on our common human condition. The work contemplates the beauty, fragility and resilience of the body while subverting a reading of the subjects as victim, monstrous or heroic. Notions of normalcy and difference are brought into question, as is the relationship between self and other." -- artist's website.
