Abstract (English)

"Toronto-based painter Shary Boyle and Venice, California artist Laurie Steelink comprised a two person exhibition. Although strangers to each other, their work was connected by both thematic and aesthetic sensibilities.

Shary Boyle exhibited small scale drawings which form an integral part of her practice. Her figurative imagery explores the realm of fantasy and dreams, placing a variety of characters into often uncomfortable or alienated situations.

Laurie Steelink produced intricate drawings whose graphic, comic aesthetic relates to her hobby as a tattoo artist. Her series of large scale drawings produced from 1995-97 were mostly titled as self-portraits. These surreal caricatures take the form of female characters in sexually anxious or emotionally-charged states." -- publisher's website.
