Abstract (English)

"The works in the Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection tell many stories. Traditional and innovative pieces by both established and emerging artists have come to the Gallery over time.

We acquired our first painting in 1981, beginning what is now a collection of over 1600 works of art. Paintings, drawings, and photography, sculpture, beadwork, and art installations contribute to a rich collection which we exhibit regularly.

From the beginning, the focus of our collection has been on contemporary Indigenous art. In the late 1990’s our collecting mandate was broadened and we began acquiring works by artists from Northwestern Ontario, as well as artwork that represents the region.

We are proud that the cultural, social and artistic value of our collection is widely recognized across Canada and beyond." -- publisher's website.
