Abstract (English)

"DIY Toronto 1975-1989 is a subjective and almost random listing and attempt to describe that period in Toronto's history when every realm of creative activity was distinguished by counterculture tendencies. Punk rock, experimental music, artist-run galleries and collectives, underground theatre, avant-garde film, small-press poetry and postmodern dance. Very little of this activity registered on mainstream media's radar. Instead, the burgeoning alternative arts scene was represented in zines and other less-than-profitable publications, tabloids, street posters, community radio shows and word-of-mouth." -- Introduction.
