Abstract (English)

Slemmons discusses the pitfalls of public art collecting, the history of photographic acquisitions at the Seattle Art Museum, and some of the strategies used in their selection. One such strategy, was to collect in order to explore the relationship between documentary and "art" photography, and led to a collection that can be seen as a survey of rhetorical conventions in American photography.
