Abstract (English)

"This article discusses the nuanced politics of refusal within the art world and examines the many degrees of refusal by critiquing oppressive systems within art communities and the importance of remembering communities that helped foster one’s creativity in the first place. The article examines Vettivelu’s moderated discussion “Damned If You Do: A Conversation on the Politics of Refusal”, which ensued at Toronto’s Whippersnapper Gallery in May 2016 and which lends itself to the article’s initial discussion. The article assesses the ways refusal is navigated through various lenses." -- Publisher's website.
