Abstract (English)

"While the narrative of modernism has often excluded artists and intellectuals of African descent, Afro Modern : Journeys through the Black Atlantic demonstrates that they have been central to the formation of modernity and modern art. The notion of 'the Black Atlantic' was coined by British academic Paul Gilroy in the early 1990s to describe the hybrid cultures that have arisen as a result of the dispersal of black peoples. Leading critics and artists from Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas examine aspects of Gilroy's concept and its relevance to art, encompassing a wide range of movements and ideas from the 'negrophilia' of 1920s Pairs, to the Harlem Renaissance, and 'Negritude', and on to current contemporary art." -- Publisher's website.
