"In small communities throughout the western world, from the 1880s until the development of the hand-held camera in the twentieth century, the town portrait photographer was the chronicler of his time. Duncan Donovan (1857-1933) of Alexandria, Glengarry County, Ont., was typical. He portrayed the ceremonial events of life from birth to death, and the stages in between." -- Dust jacket.
