Abstract (English)

"1977 dawned on a Nigeria brimming with promise, full with the spoils of Niger Delta oil and national pride 17 years post-independence. It was a time of afrobeat musical innovation, of cross-continental exchange, of vibrancy and possibility. A contingent of 250 artists and cultural producers selected by artist Jeff Donaldson and the U.S. organizing committee, traveled from New York to Lagos, Nigeria, on two planes chartered by the U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs, to participate in FESTAC ’77, the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture." -- page 3.
