Abstract (English)

Fischer focuses on "the material means by which six contemporary Canadian artists attempt to renegotiate definitions of cultural identity, especially in the context of the art gallery and the museum." The author discusses and contextualizes the artists' work, touching on references ranging from Gounod, Barthes, Kristeva and Homi Bhabha to accounts of native and Inuit culture, and personal histories.
