Abstract (English)

McKaskell establishes the context of the visual arts in the 1950s with reference to the development of exhibitions and arts organizations, the establishment of abstraction, and the American influence. Paikowsky considers the emergence of abstract painting in Québec, giving attention to art criticism. Collier and Wright discuss design in Canada, investigating the roots of modernism, the institutional promotion of modern design, the shift from British to American influence, and the role of women.
