Abstract (English)

Treating the practice of ceramics and the ceramic-based installations by four Canadian artists, five essays review the ways in which artists manipulate clay's closeness to memory, imprint, and the body, as well as its capacity to carry personal, socio-political, and cultural histories. White deals extensively with ceramics in relation to function, modernism, social context, and the art/craft dilemma. Biographical notes. 29 bibl. ref.
