Abstract (English)

In an extended, eight-part essay, Campbell relates the work of Merz to the Western condition of memory: traced back to the Greek muse of memory, developed through associational evocations of previous (European) art, architecture, and literature and the aesthetic experience of it, and culminating in the universal recollection of vanity and human mortality. The text incorporates such sources as Valéry, Hölderlin, Pound, Kristeva, Wittgenstein, Gadamer, Derrida, Ovid and Husserl. 26 bibl. ref.
