Abstract (English)

Young Man's indepth examination of contemporary work by First Nations artists is presented in a writing style which combines historical analysis with personal anecdote. Focusing on how Western stereotypes of First Nations people define their history and art, the author offers a wide ranging critique of Western anthropological and ethnographic practices of exhibiting contemporary/traditional Native art and culture. Concepts of discovery, conquest and primitivism are also discussed in relation to Aboriginal myths and legends. Biographical notes. Circa 69 bibl. ref.
