Abstract (English)

Hurtig provides a critical context for the Kamloops Art Gallery's collection of contemporary Canadian art by tracing developments in the visual arts through the 1980s-90s. Her analysis of changes in art praxis/theory brought on by advances in new media and computer technology is situated within the following contexts: 1968 and the crisis of modernism; postmodernism; concepts of difference (sexual, racial and cultural); discourses of the other; feminist art and the politics of representation. Questions concerning originality, authenticity, the autonomy of art and site-specificity are also discussed. Includes list of works. 29 bibl. ref.
