Abstract (English)

This CD-ROM presents “Control/mutate” (1998), a Web art project – composed of images and animations of mutating cells, beating human hearts, distorted DNA strands, etc. – by two members of the YEAR ZERO ONE on-line artist-run network: Toronto artists M. Alstead and H. Alegria-Ortiz. In their introduction to the project, the artists state that the site is concerned with the ethical implications of biotechnology and the industrialization of DNA. Includes an essay by Alegria-Ortiz that offers a brief definition of DNA, while touching on the ethical issues related to genetic research.
