Abstract (English)

"Saskatoon artist Janet Werner's naively rendered paintings and drawings defy the concept of 'truth in art' and, rather than offering a set of easy-to-read signs and symbols, function more like a series of notches cut into trees; the emphasis is on production and interpretation, on the spaces in between. What at first may appear as a failure of clarity is actually a passive opposition to it, rooted in the belief that the most profoundly held truths are those which cannot be articulated. Discrete images including monochromes, patterns, abstracted natural forms, words, the faces of people and dogs were, in this installation, joined by found objects such as tiny pairs of shoes, stuffed with toys and small figurines which served to heighten the sense of urgency in the search for connection." -- publisher's website.
