Abstract (English)

"Past is Prologue is an ongoing program that invites artist, curators, writers and scholars to consider works in the Western Front Media Archive. Researcher Alex Muir will present a screening of works from the archive that asks how fiction is situated in the early history of video making. While its relationship to documentary, performance, relational sculpture and visual art are frequently invoked, mention of video’s place as a storytelling medium is conspicuously scarce. The Western Front hosts a range of works that find artists playing at making movies—obstinately miming Hollywood in a moment when the image industry was jumping to a global scale. Lucky Pennies considers how these efforts relate to block-busting La La Land and the subjectivities it ushers in." -- Publisher's website.
