Abstract (English)"Cornerstone artists Michael Belmore (Anishnabe) and David Ruben Piqtoukun (Inuit) explore the personal relationship they cultivate with stone, land and mythology. It is also through the process of exploration that these two artists are able to cultivate their personal history and their relationship to ancestral customs. Michael Belmore's installation for this exhibition, Grotesques of the Eastern Woodlands, combines the style of the European Gothic architectural era with Anishnabe petroglyphs. Carving out of limestone found in the Great Lakes region, Belmore created a gargoyle in the image of Misshipeshu." -- Publisher's website.
