Abstract (English)

The full script along with stills from Greenaway's 1995 film of the same name, a contemporary "text-driven" story set in Kyoto and Hong Kong, inspired by a 10th-century book written by Sei Shonagon, an imperial lady-in-waiting. Greenaway's introductory text gives some insight into the making of the film and includes the text of his 1984 cinema project inspired by Sei Shonagon's "arbitrary list-making obsession".
