McElroy, an installation artist and "military brat", acts here as the curator of an exhibition on the Halifax Citadel and Public Gardens. His essay highlights the history of Canada's most visited national monument and analyses the "machinery of seeing" unfolded by the fortress and its surrounding gardens.
