Abstract (English)

Focusing on Burman's provocative strategies of self-representation, Nead surveys the militant work of this British woman of South Asian descent since the early 1980s. The author investigates the artist's use of family portraits, her reliance on a wide range of visual forms (including video and performance art), her role as a curator, writer, and community activist, and her critical sense of history and tradition. Biographical notes. 47 bibl. ref.
