Abstract (English)

This book - published on the occasion of Smith's 1997 retrospective at the Vancouver Art Gallery - contains two essays by curators Thom and Hunter. While the first gives an overview of Smith's career and contextualizes his practice within postwar Canadian modernism, the latter evokes various places related to Smith's life and work through a combination of facts and fiction. Bogusky's preface underlines the enduring commitment of the Vancouver Art Gallery to Smith's oeuvre since 1944. Includes a detailed chronology on Smith, brief biographical notes on the authors (printed on jacket), and a list of exhibited works. 65 bibl. ref. Bibl. 11 p.
