Abstract (English)Catalogue for an exhibition in which Mavrogordato and Newdigate present installations referring to the 11th century Bayeux Tapestry as source material. Kiendl points out differences in the artists’ use of weaving, while touching on subjects of war, history, environmental degradation, sexual politics and technology. Maestro’s essay highlights the subversive quality of Newdigate’s “Ciphers from the Muniments Room” – a scripto-visual work dealing with issues of war, death and remembrance. She suggests that Newdigate’s piece critiques patriarchy and phallocentric language by placing value upon materiality and the sensuous intelligence of the hands. Dyer’s interpretation of Mavrogordato’s embroidered images of female body parts addresses issues of “dis-ease,” sex, violence and death (within the context of women’s health). Brief biographical notes on artists and authors. 15 bibl. ref.
