Abstract (English)

Catalogue for an exhibition of modern furniture design, which features 13 pieces produced between 1940 and 1960 (the majority of the works are from the Knoll Museum in Pennsylvania). Baker’s critical analysis of H. Knoll’s belief in the efficacy of modern design – a form of post-war democratic utopianism in which historical reference is absent – places emphasis on the need for an “alternative modernity” that combines “the practicalities of machine age existence” with the “psychic and sensual forces of place, material and memory.” Includes list of works. 7 bibl. ref.
