Abstract (English)This catalogue to accompany Will’s travelling exhibition contains critical essays by J. Spalding and C. Sowiak, and brief “testimonials” by twenty-seven invited writers (primarily artists). Sowiak’s essay on selected works in the exhibition focuses on the autobiographical dimension of the artist’s “celebrity paintings” and “chro-nicles.” His interpretation of Will’s practice – incorporating lithography, painting, photography, video and text – draws attention to how humour, irony and satire are used to explore subjects of fame, organized religion, popular culture, world politics and war. Spalding traces the evolution of the artist’s work. His interpretation of relationships between the visual, linguistic and ready-made elements of Will’s text paintings, highlights the social/existential concerns being addressed. Special attention is given to the artist’s place within Calgary’s arts community and experiences at NSCAD (Halifax). Includes an artist’s chronology by C. McNichol, a list of works and transcripts of textual elements in two recent works: “Sixty Years of Hell” (1900-2000) and “Forty Years of Purgatory” (2000). 23 bibl. ref.
