Patrick Mahon : PalindromeTools Brydon, Anne; Metcalfe, Robin. Patrick Mahon : Palindrome. Lethbridge, Alta: Southern Alberta Art Gallery, 2000.
Abstract (English)An exhibition catalogue to accompany Mahon’s recent body of work based on the model of a palindrome: a linguistic or musical construction that reads the same forwards and backwards. Brydon’s essay focuses on the complex relations between perception/meaning, figure/ground and pattern/confusion present within Mahon’s textual/visual notations incorporating specially designed wallpaper. Ideological notions of the feminine, domestic space and the decorative are considered in relation to the aesthetic ambiguity within the work. Brydon also suggests that the artist is concerned with concepts of reciprocity and the gift, as they relate to notions of the self. Metcalfe focuses on the relationship between surface and structure in Mahon’s installation, while situating the piece within the context of previous works that involve wallpaper. He suggests the artist offers a critique of masculine Modernist aesthetics by challenging gender-based structures of power associated with decoration and the domestic. Includes list of works. Biographical notes. 17 bibl. ref.
