Diana Lynn Thompson : Hundreds + ThousandsTools Thompson, Diana Lynn; Warland, Betsy. Diana Lynn Thompson : Hundreds + Thousands. Surrey, BC: Surrey Art Gallery, 2001.
Abstract (English)A publication produced in conjunction with Thompson’s interactive installation Hundreds & Thousands (2000-2001), which combined: natural objects gathered from a park (flower petals, insect skins, bird feathers, moss, etc.) displayed in white porcelain bowls; thousands of leaves pinned to the gallery wall; books that inspire Thompson; and a copy of the artist’s Bear Creek Park journal. Warland provides a detailed description of the installation, and places it within the context of three previous exhibitions by the artist. Her analysis of the artist’s labour-intensive process foregrounds issues of excess, intimacy and care, especially as they pertain to concepts of beauty, nature and culture. Warland also makes numerous references to the artist’s journal and her artistic/literary sources of inspiration. Includes a brief introductory text by Davison, excerpts from the artist’s journal and a brief artist’s statement on the cover’s inside flap. Biographical notes. 35 bibl. ref.
