Abstract (English)

Catalogue for Tam’s exhibition of photographs based on video stills of his former elementary school in Hong Kong, which he revisited after the former colony’s return to China. Guest curator Garnet offers a brief presentation of the artist’s project, and conducts an interview with Tam, in which they look at two other photographic works: “Posers” and “Passages” (2000). Issues of race, gender, age and memory are discussed. Folland’s essay draws attention to the critical quality of Tam’s “Lessons,” demonstrating a continuity with earlier bodies of work that dealt with images of Asian culture. Includes the lyrics from Tam’s school song. Texts in English, with a short text in Chinese. Biographical notes. 2 bibl. ref.
