Abstract (English)

Catalogue for a group exhibition co-curated by Garvey and Metcalfe. Garvey refers to the six artists in the exhibition as “object makers” who do not follow Greenbergian formalist dogma. Emphasis is placed on how formal and sensual characteristics of their minimal sculptures affect viewers physically and mentally. Metcalfe’s essay focuses on the “thingness” of the works, and their ability to create meaning without representation. Includes an analysis of how the meaning of the word “thing” has evolved throughout history. Biographical notes. 13 bibl. ref.
